A Simple Solution That Becomes a Costly Problem

An aging mother wanted to make sure her bills would be paid if she ever became too ill to manage her finances. If the account holds $100,000 and you add your daughter as a joint owner, you have technically made a $50,000 gift. What Happens If the Joint Owner Dies First

Most people assume that if they add their child to their account and the child dies first, the account simply reverts back to them. That is not always the case.

In many states, when a joint account holder dies, their share of the account passes to their estate — not automatically back to the surviving account holder. That means the deceased person's heirs, creditors, or even ex-spouse could have a legal claim to half the funds in the account.

Smarter Alternatives to Joint Accounts

The good news is that there are safer, more effective ways to give someone access to your finances without giving them ownership.

Power of Attorney

A Durable Power of Attorney allows you to name someone to manage your finances on your behalf without making them an owner of your accounts. They can pay bills, make deposits, and handle transactions — but the money remains legally yours. Their creditors cannot touch it, and it does not trigger gift tax issues.

Authorized Signer or Convenience Account

Some banks offer "authorized signer" or "convenience account" designations that allow another person to access the account for specific purposes without becoming a legal owner. This is less common and varies by state and institution, but it can provide a middle ground.

Payable on Death (POD) Designation

If your goal is simply to ensure the account passes to your child after your death without going through probate, a Payable on Death designation accomplishes this without giving them any access or ownership during your lifetime. The account remains entirely yours until you die, at which point it transfers directly to the named beneficiary.
